Luscious Body Butter ~

Many of us have turned the corner of the cold winter months which often play havoc with our skin. Our lips become dry and chapped, our feet get forgotten about and our legs and arms don’t see the light of day.

Now summer is almost upon us and body care comes into its own as we suddenly remember our forgotten about body areas.

Body butter is one of those products I always avoided fearing it would be overly greasy even when my skin may be drier than normal.

Deciding to tackle this and seeing the results certain “natural” ingredients had on my own skin, I am now a converted fan of this luscious (because it is) body butter that does not make my skin overly greasy but rather has deep nourishing and moisturizing benefits.

I tend to favor lotions rather than creams after a shower but I have to say slathering on this buttery but light whipped cream feels and smells wonderful!

I used Lavender and Bergamot essential oils as I love these two fragrances but you can be adventurous and individual with your choice and make your own favorite blend!

Keep It Simple ~

If you have been following my series delving into DIY beauty and cosmetic products you will know my passion for this business. From unpacking cosmetic brands Max Factor, Mary Quant and Miners as a child in my dad’s business to a career that spanned over 25 years within the cosmetic world, in one shape or form.

I find it interesting that I have done a full 360 degree turn now and strongly believe homemade “lotions and potions” have more benefits and reasons to turn to than the commercial brands I once sold as a living. What started out as a way to save money has turned into so much more.

The everyday foods we often eat for health benefits have a wealth of reasons to use on our skins be it in an eye cream, a hand scrub or a facial moisturizer. This recipe is another example of using ingredients that combine to deliver on every level.

When you consider the amount of chemicals, synthetic fragrance and often toxic ingredients that are found in many store products that have inflated prices attached, making your own body butter and your entire cosmetic, perfume and family needs will reap you more benefits than you would imagine.

Specialized equipment for homemade cosmetics is not needed and many ingredients may be utilized in different homemade products making them very cost effective ingredients, for example, Shea Butter and Coconut Oil.

Body Butter Recipe ~

Ingredients:

1 cup Shea Butter

½ cup Virgin Coconut Oil

½ cup Almond Oil

30 drops Essential Oils of choice (1, 2 or 3 works best)

Equipment You Will Need:

Double Boiler (heatproof bowl in a saucepan will do)

Pyrex Glass Jug

Metal Spoon

Hand Whisk

Large Mixing Bowl

3 – 4 Small Glass Jars

Method:

  • Add the shea butter and coconut oil into the top of the double boiler to melt over a low heat. This should not take too long. Keep at a low heat to maximize all the nutrients in these ingredients.
  • When the oil and butter have melted turn off heat and remove from the stove.
  • Transfer to your Pyrex jug (not essential but I find it easier for the following steps)
  • Leave cool for 20 minutes.
  • Pour in the almond oil and gently mix.
  • Add in the essential oils and mix together.
  • Leave to almost solidify by placing in the fridge or somewhere cold (approximately an hour). Check so it does not turn solid completely.
  • Transfer into your large mixing bowl and start to whisk it to a whipped cream or butter like consistency.
  • It will have increased in volume from this whipping.
  • Spoon into your containers, close with the lid and your body butter is ready!

Tips ~

If possible use organic ingredients which will have the highest level of nutrients possible yielding the best quality body butter. Look for cold pressed extraction methods used in ingredients such as oils and essential oils.

If you have an allergy to coconut you could use cocoa butter instead or use the cocoa butter in place of the shea butter or use Vitamin E Oil.

Be creative and give a jar of luscious butter to friends, family or even sell at your local farmers market.

Essential Oil suggestions:

Lavender, Rose, Jasmine, Peppermint, Patchouli, Ylang-Ylang, Sandalwood, Orange, Geranium, Rosemary, Vetiver, Palma Rosa, Neroli, Chamomile, Myrrh and Frankincense.

Carrier Oil (or base oil) suggestions:

Argan Oil, Avocado Oil, Jojoba Oil, Apricot Kernel Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, Olive Oil, Grapeseed (Rapeseed) Oil and Calendula Oil.
